Colorectal cancer
Over 130,000 new colorectal cancer patients will be diagnosed this year. Symptoms that may indicate cancer of the colon or rectum include:
     • A change in bowel habits
     • Diarrhea or constipation
     • Blood in the stool
     • Narrow stools (about the thickness of a pencil)
     • Bloating, fullness or abdominal cramps
     • Feeling like the bowel does not empty completely
     • Weight loss without dieting
     • Continuing fatigue
     • Anemia

Most of these symptoms are associated with other disorders — including hemorrhoids, inflammatory bowel disease and infections. That’s why you should call Dr. Amontree if you have any symptoms. Even without symptoms, remember that regular colon cancer screening can save your life and is an essential part of your healthcare if you are over age 50 or have a family history of colon cancer or colorectal cancer.

Irritable bowel syndrome
If you suffer with frequent abdominal pain and other stomach problems, you may have irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). IBS can affect your ability to socialize, work, travel or live a normal life. Symptoms to look for may include:
     • Diarrhea • Constipation • Irregularity
     • Abdominal pain • Bloating • Gas
     • Excessive flatulence • Mucus in the stool
Dr. Amontree may want to rule out other disorders first. He’ll take the time to accurately diagnose your problem. Plus, he’ll make you feel comfortable from your first appointment until your last.

GERD
Heartburn and acid indigestion are common problems. But if your symptoms are more than just occasional, you may have gastroesophageal reflux disease, or GERD. The symptoms you should look for include:
     • Frequent heartburn • Regurgitation
     • Chest pain • Difficult or painful swallowing
     • Hoarseness • Wheezing • Chronic cough
Some of these may indicate other medical conditions. That’s why you should call Dr. Amontree for a thorough evaluation. New treatment options are available to help get your symptoms under control. You may need an Upper GI Endoscopy to determine whether or not you have GERD and to treat any damage that may have been caused to your esophagus. Dr. Amontree has many years of experience with this test and will take care to make sure you are comfortable during and after the procedure.

Hepatitis & other liver disorders
Hepatitis is a fairly common inflammatory liver disease. Currently five major viruses can infect the liver; generally only two of them cause chronic hepatitis: hepatitis B and hepatitis C. Symptoms to watch out for may include:
     • Fever • Fatigue
     • Body aches • Jaundice (yellowed skin)

Crohn’s disease & ulcerative colitis
Crohn’s disease is a chronic inflammatory condition of the digestive tract. Symptoms include:
     • Diarrhea • Abdominal pain • Cramping
Ulcerative colitis is an inflammatory disease of the colon, also known as the large intestine. Dr. Amontree can effectively diagnose and treat both of these conditions as well as many intestinal problems.
